Traces of Transience: Fragility and Time

An Exhibition of Artistic Photographs by Chantal Elisabeth Ariëns and Christopher Thomas

The exhibition Traces of Transience: Fragility and Time brings together the works of Chantal Elisabeth Ariëns and Christopher Thomas. It explores the fragile beauty of life and the marks left by time on nature, artificial creations, and human expressions. The works by Ariëns and Thomas invite contemplation on transience, memory, and the dignity of the unnoticed.

Chantal Elisabeth Ariëns: Fragile Stories

Amsterdam-based artist Chantal Elisabeth Ariëns creates photographs that transport the viewer into a poetic world. Her cinematic compositions, marked by intimacy and depth, address the fragility and self-determination of her subjects.
Using the technique of photopolymer etching, her works achieve a unique tactile quality. The unpredictability of this process allows for random elements, emphasizing the fleeting nature of moments and imperfection as a hallmark of authenticity. Her creations are not traditional portraits but timeless narratives interweaving fragility and poetry.

Christopher Thomas: Eternal Witnesses

In his Eternity series, Munich artist Christopher Thomas focuses on the quiet existence of artificial flowers, which he has photographed in cemeteries worldwide. These plastic flowers, originally intended as substitutes for living plants, bear the marks of time-faded colors, dust, and neglect.
Thomas presents these objects in an aesthetic that transcends their apparent banality, redefining them as symbols of transience and memory. They are silent witnesses to love and loss, their artificial longevity forming a fascinating contrast to the natural impermanence they emulate.

An Invitation to Reflect

Traces of Transience unites two artistic perspectives, each illuminating different facets of fragility and time. The works of Ariëns and Thomas encourage us to discover beauty in imperfection, honor the transient, and reflect on the traces life leaves behind. They call on us to pause and recognize the quiet poetry of transience in all its forms.
